Hey Friends! I’m here today to give you some tips on places to go to teach yourself how to sew. I didn’t grew up sewing and had to teach myself as an adult. I basically refused to fail and was determined to make my own cosplay. lol Come this way and I’ll help you get started.
Alright, first things first: You don’t need a sewing machine to sew. It makes things a whole lot faster/easier but you do not need one. Almost any pattern you get from the craft store can be done by hand so don’t feel like you can’t even try to learn if you don’t own/can’t borrow a sewing machine. This is a great video that goes over the basic stitches you’d need on any given project. If you’re making a garment I’d recommend the back stitch for all your seams to give them the strength they need. The blogs and YouTube channels I’m going to share will still be able to help you!
Simple projects are what I would suggest starting with. The Blog “Made Everyday” has a bunch of options. I’d start here as to not get overwhelmed. Just pick something and get started! She also has a YouTube channel as well.
Once you figure out what you want to make one of the first places I’d go is Professor Pincushion. Her YouTube channel offers everything from step by step pattern tutorials to going over the basics you may need not matter what skill level you’re at. Don’t be intimidated either. Just take it slow and you’ll be fine.
Don’t see anything that catches your eye there? Here are some other great places that can help you get started:
And I think that’s enough for now. LOL I don’t want to scare you away. I do hope this helped give you a gentle nudge if you’ve wanted to start sewing but didn’t know how. Feel free to ask questions in the comments and I will do my best to get you an answer!
See ya next time.
