Every Friday we’ll pick a theme and then five things (hence the name! We’re so original!!!!!) that fit that theme. Feel free to make your own choices in the comments, or send them to us on Twitter. This week we’re talking about the things we remember about spring break.

I’ve never really treated spring break as anything more than time off from school, because for the most part my family didn’t travel, and when I was in college I was also working and couldn’t afford to do much of anything. But when I was in high school I inherited some money and was able to pay for school trips to Spain two years in a row during spring break. The second year we went to Palma de Mallorca and had rooms that were basically apartments right on this rocky outcropping that overlooked the water. My two roommates and I went to a local grocery store one evening and then cooked ourselves dinner in the little kitchen, and I remember making macaroni and cheese (in some sort of shape, I don’t remember the shape; I have photos of this somewhere but the albums are in storage) and setting the table like we were fancy ladies. And then sneaking smokes on our balcony like real grownups. It was so fun.

When I was in college, my dad, brother, and I met in Orlando at Disney World and had SO MUCH FUN. It’s one of the last great memories I have of spending time with them together, and I actually found Disney a lot more entertaining at that age than I did when I was a kid.

I don’t know if you thought this was gonna be like a “Cancun baby!!!!!” type of Spring Break post, but no. No it is not. When I was maybe…13 or 14? my family drove through the entire state of Arizona and it was so much fun. My parents rented a minivan and we went from northern Arizona, where it was cold and snowy, all the way down to the desert in Tuscon. It looked exactly like that picture. Just incredible.

Ok, so my senior year of high school, my mom and her husband decided it would be a fun vacation to go to Death Valley for Spring break. In camper. With no AC. In April. Now I know that may seem like a great idea to those not familiar with the South West , but I assure you it is not. By mid April we’re in the high 90’s at least. This particular year it was 101* when we pulled into our camp spot. You can imagine what a delightful child I was at this point. Fast forward for them dragging me kicking and screaming to this house. I had the BIGGEST chip on my shoulder going in but when we got to the part of the tour were they took us to the library it all changed. It was like I was Belle and the beast was showing me his library. It was beautiful. I want one. I of course did not let either adult know how much I actually liked it but the memory of this place has really stuck with me.
Ok I’m cheating a little bit here but IT’S NOT MY FAULT! The University I went to didn’t have a spring break! But what it did have was my travel class. Ok it was more of a “see what this major would entail in the real world” kind of class BUT if you took it the second block of the winter semester you took a trip to Vegas and SoCal. It was a pass fail class and I convinced my fave roomie and another good friend to take it with me. We had so much FUN! The video above if from one of the last places we visited. All and all it was one of my best memories from college.
