The Signs of Summer

Since it’s officially summer that means a few things around my part of the country.

First off it’s fishing season. Although others would say you could start way earlier (which we have in the past), I prefer to summer fish. During the summer, you can go out early and spend a few hours in the sun with your pole in the water then head off to do something else for the day. Or even better going out in the evening and catfishing. So far I’ve only gone twice this summer, but totally caught the biggest (and only keeper) this past weekend.

The next thing is the start of festivals. One of the very first summer festivals around here is the Troy Strawberry festival. Everything is strawberry. And I mean everything! You name it and they’ve added strawberries to it.  The highlight for my family though is the strawberry donuts. The high school band runs the booth and makes all the donuts. I’m pretty sure the sign said that last year they made 13,000 dozen donuts and still sold out! The line is long, but totally worth it.

The last thing that screams summer are Farmer’s Markets. We are lucky enough to have 1 year round market, but true farmer’s markets are summer territory. The fresh veggies, baked goods, local meats and goods are the best. I typically visit at least 2 every weekend. It might seem excessive, but there are certain vendors that I visit every week. I also eat breakfast at the market on Saturdays. Depending on which market I get hungry at it varies from pastries to meat and cheese sandwiches. Seriously just thinking about it makes me hungry.

So what signals summer in your area?
